Land Rover Centurion Mountain Monster Trail Run: Big Red Barn

Event Name: Land Rover Centurion Mountain Monster Trail Run : Big Red Barn

Date Held: 14 May 2017

Distances: 30km / 15km / 5km

Venue: Big Red Barn

Website: Big Red Barn

On 14 May 2017 we kicked off the Land Rover mountain monster series at The Big Red Barn, in Irene.

It was a freezing day and Gauteng was experiencing a cold front that weekend. Nevertheless determined trail runners got up, got dresses and braved the icy air for a nice and early morning Trail run.

The set up was very nice, there was music and coffee and lots of excitement going around – When I got out of my car before the race started by thermometer read 5.5°. It was cold guys!

I wore my nice thick winter tights along with 3 shirts, 1 buff and my amazing motion dry ASICS Jacket. I was prepared to face this cold. I met up with Ingrid Hauger, fellow Trail runner. It was great to finally meet her after stalking each other on Instagram for a while.

Before the race we all got nice goodie bags filled with Pecan-nut bars (My husband ate all of it, I didn’t even get to taste…). We also got some shake samples and a pen.

Before we started we were properly scoped by a drone that was taking a video of the race. The sun was nice and out, but that did not help too much for the icy weather.

Nice and nervous we started out 15km trail- I literally flew off, so fast, haha I have no idea why I decided to start so fast! I kept it going for 2km and realized I have to kinda chill now otherwise I’m not gonna make it.

The route is nice and flat and I would definitely recommend it to beginner trail runners. It rained a few days before, so the route was nice and fresh, and wet, and at some places a little muddy. We went over two bridges that were made for the mountain bikers – which was a little exciting, but that was about it.

The water stop was pretty awesome! There was nice drinks to choose from and delicious snacks – I was a little overwhelmed and did not know where I would place all the snacks – so I just grabbed a few jelly sugar sweet rings and placed them around my fingers – like when we were kids! Anyway they came in handy quite allot for the next few Kilometres.

I was very happy with my time and got a great pace going until we hit a little mud. We started to slip and slide a bit – like ice skating, the mud was also nice and sticky so as you ran it sounded like you were running with suction cups underneath your feet.

The route loops round a lot, so you essentially get a little confused as to what direction you’re running after a while. You can see on the map below; it gets a little crazy.

Most of the way you run single track and you have to take your chance at overtaking someone when I comes. The views are really beautiful and its surprising to be in a forest so close to the city.

After a while the bubbely 5km runners started passing us – looking nice and fresh, giving a little motivation to press forward.

As we ended all the mothers got roses and medals at the finish line – there was lots of stands supplying runners with recovery drinks and suggested products. It was a great run and the Photos taken was also very nice. The route was not as monstrous and technical as the name suggested, but a good beginner trail in the series.

Below is Trail runner Ingrid Hauger , and Edwin Sesipi (click on the names – it will take you to their Instagram pages!).

Edwin Won the 30km Race in his age group – He runs so fast, its Crazy! He won The Cell C – Africa X along with Mr. Givemore Mudzinganyama

The next Trail run will be at Gauteng’s Premier Enduro MTB & Trail Running Venue, Hakahana Trails. Hakahana Trails is located approximately 15km west of Pretoria, next to Gerotek and on route to Hartbeespoort dam. This ex-horse farm is a truly tranquil setting, consisting of huge paddocks, riverine ecology and pristine bushveld koppies. The Hakahana Trails Network traverses over 40 properties enabling a unique, safe and diverse riding experience, mostly on custom-built single track in pristine bushveld surrounds.

While Hakahana will give you a super outing and running experience for the family, Hakahana trails is particularly recommended for its challenging trails and technical terrain.

I’m very excited to be a part of this race – and I’m looking forward to running a technical route. Hope to see you there!
